Georgetown Student Named 2008 Global Leader

Georgetown University student Pamela Nwaoko (COL ‘10) was recently selected as a 2008 U.S. Goldman Sachs Global Leader. The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program identifies and rewards the academic excellence and leadership potential of 150 of the most accomplished second-year students across the world from all disciplines. Nwaoko is one of 16 U.S. students selected to receive a $3,000 award and advanced leadership training.

“Pamela’s dedication to academic excellence and to providing service to others embodies Georgetown University’s mission to train leaders who are well informed and engaged in their communities,” said Jane McAuliffe, Dean of Georgetown College. “We are pleased to congratulate Pamela on this recognition of her exceptional scholarship and on this unique opportunity to develop her leadership skills. We look forward to her continued contributions to the campus community as well as her certain success in her future endeavors.”

Pamela Nwaoko, a Nigerian-American resident of Irvington, N.J., is a sophomore, currently pursuing a major in government, concentrating in Jurisprudence of International Law, with a minor in Spanish language. In the fall, she will travel to Europe to attend the London School of Economics and Political Science to further her study of international law. Nwaoko is the current co-coordinator of YLEAD (Young Leaders in Education About Diversity), Georgetown’s pre-orientation program dedicated to raising awareness and initiating dialogue surrounding religious tolerance, sexual orientation, age race, ability, class, and culture. Her passion for justice and equality has manifested itself in many ways. She has served for the Georgetown University Society of Global Professionals and is an ardent employee for the Center for Multicultural Equity and Access where she promotes and advocates for the necessities of all people of color on Georgetown’s campus. Nwaoko is currently co-directing Girl Talk, a mentorship program geared towards African American high school females for the purpose of providing a forum to promote awareness about gender issues in academia, social and family life.

“Though I’ve seen oppression, injustice, cruelty and ignorance in my own life, I also understand many others endure similar experiences,” wrote Nwaoko in her career aspirations application essay, which told of her desire to become a specialist in international human rights law. “I hope to find a connection with others on the margins. By combining these experiences with reason, knowledge of the law, and a grounded understanding of societal systems, I can speak for those at the brinks of their individual communities. In doing so, I can advocate for all, to ensure that we live in a more just and equitable society.”

The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program identifies exceptional, second-year college students who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership potential and provides them with unique opportunities for that will enhance their leadership abilities. The program provides young leaders with a unique international network through which they can share ideas, learn from established leaders, work collaboratively and address global challenges. By exposing participants to the complex issues and opportunities arising from an increasingly interdependent global economy, the program aims to expand perspectives and enhance skills critical for leadership in a changing world.

In the United States, the Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program selected 16 Global Leaders from the 27 participating U.S. universities. Global Leaders were invited to attend an award ceremony in New York City on April 10-13, 2008 where they received their $3,000 awards. In conjunction with the award ceremony, a selection panel interviewed the Global Leaders and will select eight to receive an all-expense-paid trip to represent the group at the Global Leadership Institute in New York City in July 2008.

The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders selected to attend the Global Leadership Institute will participate in leadership training and seminars on timely international issues. They will consult with renowned leaders in the public, civic, and private sectors and build ties based on shared experiences and common goals. Activities for participants will include various cultural events in New York City. Global Leaders attending the Global Leadership Institute will be responsible for communicating the essence of the experience to the rest of the group.
