International Travel for Faculty and Staff
Georgetown University recognizes and supports the significant international expertise of its faculty and interest and engagement of its s tudents, faculty, and staff in global activities. In September 2012, Georgetown University implemented an international travel policy for all faculty, staff, and students participating in international travel supported by or related to the university.
All full- and part-time members of the faculty, including adjunct faculty, and staff members participating in university-related programs, activities, or events abroad must follow the steps outlined on the appropriate International Travel Policy Checklists. The policy checklists, required forms, and the full policy document can be found here.
GU Travel Registration
All faculty and staff participating in university-related international travel are required to register their travel plans in the university’s online travel registration system. Travel registration provides the university with the information it needs to locate travelers in the event of a crisis or emergency. The university may not be able to assist or arrange evacuation for students, faculty and staff who do not register their travel.
Travelers may register in either of the following ways:
- Book your travel through either of the university’s preferred travel agencies: Georgetown Travel Online (GTO) or Anthony Travel. Reservations confirmed and ticketed through these agencies are automatically registered.
- Manually register by entering your travel itinerary into MyTrips. MyTrips is a secure online system managed by International SOS. A step-by-step guide for manually registering travel in MyTrips can be found here.
Travel can also be registered manually by forwarding your travel itinerary to MyTrips@travelsecurity.com. You will need to create a MyTrips profile before you forward your itinerary for the first time. You can setup or update your MyTrips profile by clicking here. Please make sure to set up your MyTrips username by using your Georgetown email address. Trip confirmation emails will be sent to the email address used in your MyTrips profile.
International Health Insurance for Faculty and Staff
The university’s international travel policy requires that all faculty and staff have adequate health insurance coverage for the period of time that they are traveling overseas. The faculty or staff member should first contact his/her primary health insurance provider to find out what benefits apply to international travel. Should you feel that you need additional coverage, there are several options available to faculty and staff.
Faculty and staff participating in university-related international travel are eligible to enroll in the GU International Health Insurance policy. The insurance coverage is provided through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) and billed on a daily rate. The policy is designed to meet the special needs of international travelers and includes benefits such as emergency medical evacuation, family reunion, and repatriation of remains. Please contact the Office of Global Services for more information and assistance in enrolling in this insurance.
Faculty and staff are welcome to explore other international health insurance options. The Office of Risk Management maintains a list of international health insurance providers on their website.
