Coronavirus (COVID-19) University Travel Guidance

University Moratorium on Travel

In light of the evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, its impact on our community and the advent of increased vaccination opportunities, we must balance restrictions on activities in compliance with public health imperatives and the desire to promote and facilitate learning and research. In the context of this trade-off, the travel policy for the remainder of the Spring semester and Summer 2021 is reflected in the COVID-19 Spring and Summer Travel Policy.

Community members who have traveled for personal reasons are subject to self-quarantine and testing requirements. Please visit our Healthy and Safety Information page for the latest requirements.

For Students

The university has suspended ALL university-sponsored or related student travel until further notice, including the cancellation of Spring and Summer 2021 Office of Global Education study abroad and exchange programs through August 15.

For Faculty and Staff

The university has suspended all university-sponsored and supported international and domestic air and train travel, including travel funded by a grant, foundation, company or another university, until further notice. Any travel booked during this moratorium, regardless of when it is scheduled to take place, will not be eligible for reimbursement.

Limited Exceptions

Limited exceptions to the moratorium may be granted for travel that is deemed “essential,” or travel to low-risk destinations as defined in the university’s COVID-19 Spring and Summer Travel Policy, after review by the relevant campus Executive Vice President (for students and faculty, and non-University Services staff), the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (for staff members of University Services), or the Vice President and Chief of Staff (for direct reports to the President). They will also consult with the university’s Travel Review Committee (“TRC”). The Travel Moratorium Appeals Process provides information on how to submit an appeal.

These decisions were made in the interest of the health and safety of our community, taking into account current public health guidance and the dynamic nature of the COVID-19 domestic and global response. We will continue to reassess this guidance and will update these temporary restrictions as appropriate.
